How often do we find ourselves pondering over our (beauty) existence while staring cluelessly at the lipstick counter in stores? Okay, we’re being dramatic here but doesn’t a trip to the makeup aisle make us worry about what our boyfriend will say regarding the lip colour or whether our mother will threaten to disown us if we buy one more Dracula-esque shade? Did we hear a roaring yes?
More than we’d all like to admit, ladies, we all are pretty lost and confused when it comes to lipstick shopping. Unless you’re Madonna or Beyonce who can defy logic and make every colour look enviable on their lips, choosing a shade that matches your skin tone can be a complicated task.
If you are curious to know how to pick the most flattering lipsticks for your pout, keep on reading!
N.B.: We didn’t really want to stump you even more by going the tricky cool or warm ‘skin undertones’ route, so we’ve kept it basic and comprehensible.
Fair Skin Tone
If you have very fair skin, probably like Emma Stone or back home, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, you can opt for subtle shades of nude or pink. So, dusty roses, Barbie-doll pinks, daring neon pinks should be your go-to colours. That doesn’t mean you can’t rock a dark lip as even that will look amazing against your skin tone. However, nudes and beiges would totally flatter your complexion and brighten up your face! Word of caution: Stay away from dull browns, which will make you look just blah.
Medium Skin Tone
For medium complexions, the natural colour changes slightly with every season depending on sun exposure, perhaps making you more tanned in the summer and a little fairer in the winter. Medium skin-toned beauties can literally go berserk and have fun with their lips as they get a pretty wide palette of colours to choose from like red, fuschias, browns and even peaches. You could try copper or bronze colours and even give cranberry colours a go! Roses, mauves or berries, just scream ‘bring it on’.
Darker Skin Tone
Dark reds, ruby and wine-coloured hues are a blessing for this skin colour as they would make the lips look gorgeous. You can experiment with shimmery coppers and bronzes as they would look pretty on your pucker. Remember that lipsticks with blue undertones will complement your smile and balance the white in your teeth. If you’re in a mood to go unconventional, you could opt for nudes or lighter colours, but take our suggestion and avoid neon orange hues.
The most important thing to remember is that your lip colour is just an extension of your personality. If you feel like donning a coral lip, but that doesn’t align with the universal rulebook, that’s perfectly okay—just go ahead. At the end of the day, we need to feel pretty and confident in whichever colour we choose. For instance, beauty experts advise staying away from ashy shades as it makes your face look washed out. But what the heck! Sometimes, you just are in the mood for some grey, so an ashy lip it should be!
