Today is a special day for the Kapoor Khandan as Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor, one of the coolest Bollywood Daddy- Daughter duo is coming together on-screen for the first time with just released ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’. The film showcases a tender social issue of homosexuality. Just when India is celebrating decriminalization of section 377, the film gives a boost to a positive approach to the controversial topic without hurting sentiments of the LGBT community in any manner.
ELKDTAL’s story revolves around Sweety Chaudhary played by Sonam Kapoor. Belonging to a rich businessman family in small town ‘Moha’ of Punjab, Sweety is a simple girl who harbours a secret close to her heart. Unlike others, she is a homosexual and fears the acceptance of her love interest in family and society. Sonam pulled off her challenging role in the most natural way possible.
In such a vague situation, Sahil Mirza aka Rajkummar Rao supports her. Sahil hails from a rich filmy family. He refuses to live life with ease on Dad’s money and makes his own identity as Drama Director and Writer. Initially unaware of Sweety’s love interest, Sahil falls in love with her at their first accidental meet. Rest the title justifies for both Sahil and Sweety. Rajkummar as Sahil is effortlessly brilliant in his character.
Actor Anil Kapoor is playing Balbir Chaudhary, an owner of Garments factory, fondly known as “Ambani of Moha”. One thing is for sure, Anil is not growing with age. The actor energizes the plot with his charm. Fond of cooking, Anil’s Tom and Jerry like struggle with her mother for experimenting with new delicacies in home kitchen is fun. The magic of real-life Father-Daughter relationship did wonders on-screen as well. You feel the instant connect watching him and Sonam together onscreen. As the first half starts on a gripping note, the second half takes keeps you hooked with the emotion pouring scenes that feels subtle but have a deeper meaning in real life.
The real spice of ELKDTAL is Juhi Chawla. Returning on silver screen after years of gap, the beautiful diva rocked her supporting role as Chatro, an aspiring actress and a perfect Chef. Well, one cannot simply miss the visual treat of watching Anil and Juhi are on screen together as their comic timing is just on point.
Ek Ladki ko dekha to aisa laga cast further includes Regina Cassandra (Sonam’s love interest) Brijendra Kala, Seema Pahwa in supporting yet interesting roles. The music of the film is composed by Rochak Kohli and lyrics are written by Gurpreet Saini. The remake of the popular song “Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga” matches with the essence of the film and is sung by Darshan Raval, Rochak Kohli.
Overall, in a country where people are still juggling over intercaste marriages, ELKDTAL is certainly the first Bollywood movie ever to talk about it in a very natural manner. Directed by Shelly Chopra, the film successfully passes the message of love and urges to understand and accept homosexuality beyond Taboo or Mental or Physical Illness. Beautifully written plot by Gazal Dhaliwal, Shelly Chopra Dhar entertains and educates. We must say, Sonam and Anil chose the perfect movie to debut together onscreen. Rajkummar Rao’s simplicity is his charm.
With all knots of the story tied neatly, ELKDTAL is worth a watch in this month of love.
